Amulets from Kabbalah and Other Jewish Sources

Is there anyone who does not own an object with sentimental value? An object that calms, provides feelings of security during times of happiness or crisis? Perhaps a picture with attached childhood memories, a wedding ring more valuable than its monetary worth, or presents received from one’s children? The spiritual power embedded in these personal possessions strengthen us.

Amulets work in a similar fashion. However, they have a stronger spiritual power that can lead people to significant improvements in their life on a practical and emotional level.

There are a wide variety of amulets available in stores. However, to reap the maximum assistance from an amulet, whether in regards to protection, good fortune, or warding off magic and the evil eye, one must ensure that the amulet is made of fine silver and not gold. Kabalistically, silver is considered pure. Its color is similar to white when it is new. In addition, the Hebrew letters at its root translate as longing , when a person is shown something and yearns to reach that goal. On Yom Kippur, gold jewelry is customarily removed since gold is reminiscent of the sin of the Golden Calf and the characteristic of judgment.

The Hebrew letters that comprise the word gold decrease in numerical value (ז = 7, ה = 5, ב = 2). In contrast, the Hebrew letters of silver increase in numerical value (כ = 20, ס = 60, פ = 80). A person who wants his good fortune to increase should wear an amulet from silver which symbolizes perpetual growth.

Our amulets are written by G-d fearing scribes, and not in China or India where conveyor belts churn out hundreds of amulets per hour. Each one of our amulets is blessed and exceptional. We carry amulets that help maintain pregnancies, bolster fertility, portend good luck, restore love, foster matrimonial harmony, and, of course, portend financial and business success.

The male who was created by G-d from dust, absorbs everything and is not drawn to gold. The woman who was created from the bone of the man is strong. She is not quickly mollified, remembers long-forgotten situations, and is drawn to gold because it symbolizes judgment. Kabbalah states that she should wear silver jewelry to balance her character; she should be charitable and serene, and not angry and bitter.

Women should wear fine silver amulets under their clothes, so that they touch their body. Men can wear amulets on keychains for their car or home, ensuring that they encounter charity and mercy, and judgment should not reign upon them.

Silver amulets are engraved with holy names – angel names. Amulets assist in all realms of life: fertility, pregnancy, love between man and wife, business success, and prosperity.

What is an amulet? An amulet is a piece of paper or parchment that features verses, holy names or names of angels. Amulets can be hamsa-shaped (hand), or worn as a bracelet or pendant. True amulets include ancient holy names that were passed down from kabalist to kabalist for generations A genuine amulet must be written on parchment from a deer or engraved on silver or gold, or on a metal plated with gold or silver.

According to kabbalah, the body of a person and his soul are comprised of spiritual letters that help draw Heavenly abundance, physical vitality and spirituality. A person is liable to damage his intended good fortune through his deeds. The holy names on the amulet return the person to his proper energy influences. The amulet influences a person’s consciousness regarding his energetic situation in relation to the universe. Wearing the amulet allows the energies that guide the subconscious mind to influence the person and his daily actions.

Amulets are jewelry with spiritual powers that can generate change. Amulets include ancient, powerful symbols, such as letter combinations, angel names, blessings or other symbols. They are made from various metals with energetic characteristics. These amulets were utilized since the beginning of time for protection, health and more. Many amulets include Biblical verses and excerpts from ancient holy works.

The Hebrew word amulet (קמע) is first mentioned in the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud. The Jewish sages, Ramban, Rashba and Besh”t, all agreed that amulets on parchment help ward off the evil eye and bring about medical cures. According to their opinion, the amulet should be worn near the person’s body in order to create a spiritual, protective barrier etc. Amulets were widely used amongst the later generations of kabalists, and were traditionally considered beneficial. Purportedly, the Baal Shem Tov used holy names in amulets. The higher the spiritual level of the one who writes the amulet, the more effective it is.

The different types of amulets are sourced in earlier generations. The Kabalistic sages were on spiritually high levels or received information through the holy spirit or prophecy. Amulets can help a person improve or make a change in his life’s path in various realms, such as: health, livelihood, relationships, fertility, protection against the evil eye, magic etc. The amulet creates a strong spiritual strength.

Judaism, and other religions, features many symbols. A noted example is the light blue-color which wards off the evil eye. The Tzitzit string should be colored in light-blue, and Mordechai from the Purim story wore this color as he rode on horse behind Haman, since he feared the evil eye.

The book “Raziel HaMalach” includes many amulets, many of which are still used today. Popular amulets include the Hamsa, Hoshen Gemstones and Star of David. In Oriental cultures, such as in Persia, Egypt and even Ancient Europe, these  amulets were very widely used. Amulets are mentioned in the Bible. For example, Genesis records that Rachel stole her father Laban’s ‘Urim V’Teumim’. King David also utilized the Hoshen Gems.

Amulets can help and improve a situation. Amulets can help generate a medical cure or decrease pain. Amulets can be beneficial – but we must not forget that G-d is the Ultimate Power and all decisions are in His hands.
